Manassas power generator ignites

Manassas, Va. - A two-alarm blaze brought Manassas fire crews to a power generating station on Thursday afternoon.

The fire broke out just after 3 p.m. at 8989 Godwin Drive, an electricity generating station owned by Manassas.

No one was injured, but one of the 16 diesel engines inside the facility had an electrical malfunction which started the fire.

While it's not confirmed, diesel from one of the engines could have leaked onto another engine and sparked the blaze, said Manassas Fire and Rescue spokesman Francis J. Teevan. Two years ago, another fire at the same facility was started when fuel spilled onto another engine, said Teeva
Fire crews were able to quickly douse the flames that reportedly were coming through the roof of the building.

"I was driving along, and I saw the smoke. There was a lot of black smoke at first, but then once the fire trucks got here most of it was gone," said Antonio Razafilanto, who works across the street from the power generator.

The smoke could be seen from nearby Prince William Parkway near it's intersection with Va. 28, according to initial radio reports.

City officials said power customers were not affected by the fire.
Investigators were working late into the afternoon to determine the cause of the blaze.
